Geometric non-linearity in practice

A topic that is treated as having little practical relevance by many people is that of "geometric non-linearity". Large displacements/deformations are not often found in standard technical applications. However, the usage of the 2nd-order theory to large sheet metal areas is quite helpful in order to achieve realistic results.

According to the first-order theory, large sheet metal fields (plates) are mainly subjected to bending. The high deformations in relation to the sheet thickness (here 15-30mm at t = 3mm thickness) lead in reality to a different stress state. The bending stress drops significantly whereas the membrane tensile stress increases ("towel effect"; "hammock effect").
